There are a few things to clear up with issue #3 before we move on. I’ve already iterated to many readers why this fucker took so long, so I’m not going to rehash that here. There’s a very accurate “editorial” comic in the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers about how the readers are complaining about the time it takes Rip Off Press to get another issue of the classic underground book to the public. I had to chuckle at that.
The reality is, in independent comix publishing, regardless of the internet’s ability to make everything seem immediate, things take time when you’re crafting something from scratch. Especially when you don’t have the team that Coke and Pepsi have. (Not that I want one, mind you, I’ve just given up flatting this issue since I was unable to handle the work (thanks again, Brian) and I don’t know how I’d feel about handing over the inking of any of my work, to be honest.
All that aside, what’s next? We’re definitely going to wrap up “Volume One” with the ‘final’ issue in this storyline for Chicken Outfit. Number Four will be an interesting departure as well.
One of the things I’ve learned doing Chicken Outfit is that single issues don’t really work unless you’re knocking them out once a month, so we’ve decided to just do “one off” issues in the Chicken Outfit universe instead of torturing people and leaving them with a cliff-hanger each episode. The days of serial comics is over, I think. The comics industry (as well as film, video, television and written word) is seriously oversaturated and old modes of “marketing” are going to have to be overhauled if you’re going to be seen.
The self-contained book within the series in the first step for us.
In other news, I’ve also been threatening another Paranoid Tales and I’ve been talking with some artists and writers about making it an Anthology – which seems to make sense because it’s more energy conscious to car-pool than it is to drive yourself to work every day.
I’m thinking about starting up a video blog with some tutorials. I’m going to try to do this a little different than the average as I find them a bit… koff… choke… dry.
In the meantime, I’m illustrating other weird shit over here.
That’s about it for now, but keep your eyes peeled on this BLARRGGHH for news and other stuff underground.
